History HANLEY-WOOD FOUNDED 1976 In 1976 Michael J. Hanley and Michael M. Wood founded Hanley-Wood, Inc. With headquarters in Washington, D.C., the company began as a custom publisher and has grown into one of the ten largest B-to-B media companies in the United States. 1981 BUILDER Acquired BUILDER, the premier magazine of the residential and commercial construction market, becomes the foundation for a publishing company with a vision. 1985 REMODELING Acquired The vibrant home "aftermarket" confirms the success of Hanley-Wood's commitment to America's most important industry. 1990 Hanley-Wood follows its plan to become the publisher of a network of niche publications that gives advertisers a more targeted editorial environment for their messages. To that end Hanley-Wood launches PROSALES, a publication specifically edited for building supply dealers who sell products to builders and remodelers. Later that year the company follows up with BUILDING PRODUCTS, a tabloid-sized, glossy quarterly magazine featuring new products for builders and remodelers. 1991 HWI Network Created During the 1991 recession, as competitors retrench, Hanley-Wood increases investment and acquisitions. CUSTOM HOME Hanley-Wood launches CUSTOM HOME, a bimonthly design magazine for builders, architects, and interior designers of luxury custom homes. BUILDER'S BEST HOME PLANS With the launch of BUILDER'S BEST HOME PLANS, a quarterly publication, Hanley-Wood ventures into consumer house-plan magazines for the first time. 1994 First Three-Year Plan Plans for the future: Realizing a vision takes more than hard work. It takes a plan, a commitment to follow it, and aggressive milestones against which progress can be measured. The goal of the first three-year plan is to grow the company from $25 million to $100 million by 1998. The Guide to Building Products Hanley-Wood enters the world of electronic publishing with its first CD-ROM, The Guide to Building Products. 1995 The Wells Group Acquired Custom communication: The huge and growing market for custom publishing is addressed, as this new division grows into an integrated-marketing services group, with clients in virtually every industry. 1996 Home Planners Acquired Plans and more plans: Strategic partnerships and savvy marketing help this division become the No. 1 supplier of home plans in the world; over one million homes are built using our plans BUILDER Online Launched Hanley-Wood launches its first Web site, BUILDER Online, which is an immediate success. The site gains notoriety as the No. 1 source for industry news and product information. 1997 RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECT Hanley-Wood unveils RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECT, a biannual magazine aimed exclusively at architects involved in the home building industry. REMODELING Online Launched The company launches REMODELING Online, a Web site designed for professional remodelers. Continued Support for Habitat for Humanity Hanley-Wood continues to be an active supporter of Habitat for Humanity and other charities. As the primary sponsor of the Remodeled Home of the Future, the company raised $40,000 for the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. 1998 The Aberdeen Group Acquired Cast in concrete: This major trade show producer and publisher in the concrete and masonry industries becomes a part of the family. With this acquisition, Hanley-Wood grows to a $100 million company. New Media A Web of sites: Hanley-Wood Web sites are grouped within an entity that gives them focus and enhances cross-media marketing. RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECT Online and HOME PLAN DESIGNS Launched The company launches two additions to its home building and remodeling industry supersite, HBRnet: RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECT Online, dedicated solely to the interests of residential architects; and HOME PLAN DESIGNS, a one-stop directory of thousands of house plans online. 1999 Company Sold to Veronis, Suhler, Stevenson A private equity firm with strong ties to the media industry acquires Hanley-Wood, giving it the resources for further growth. Hanley-Wood's BUILDER magazine, in partnership with Masco Corp. and Fleetwood Enterprises, builds a manufactured demonstration home targeted to the active-adult buying market on the convention floor of the 1999 International Builders' Show. Hanley-Wood's TOOLS OF THE TRADE Show '99 successfully debuts in March to rave reviewsthe first trade show designed exclusively to demonstrate new tools and techniques. 2000 ebuild Formed ebuild, the comprehensive guide to building products, launches. International Pool & Spa Expo, POOL & SPA NEWS and AQUATICS INTERNATIONAL Acquired Hanley-Wood acquires two new magazines, POOL & SPA NEWS and AQUATICS INTERNATIONAL. These new publications combined with the International Pool & Spa Expo purchased earlier this year, puts Hanley-Wood in a strong position to serve the $8 billion pool-and-spa market.
