WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 15, 2013) — BUILDER, the leading media brand in residential construction, last night honored The Ryland Group and Saint Aubyn Homes as the fastest-growing public and private home builders, respectively, during the 27th annual BUILDER 100 Awards dinner in Scottsdale, Ariz. Both companies were recognized for their annual growth in homes closed in 2012.
Though the phrase “fastest-growing home builder” may seem like an oxymoron—especially among the public companies, most of which struggled mightily during the past five years—Ryland had a stellar 2012, aided by the purchase Trend Homes in Phoenix and Timberstone Homes in Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C.
“Ryland positioned itself for the recovery last year, buying two builders in growing markets,” said Jean Dimeo, editor-in-chief of BUILDER. “In the end, the builder not only sold more homes, it reduced its costs and more than doubled its profit margin.”
Based in West Village Lake, Calif., Ryland closed 4,809 houses, up 40.9 percent over 2011. The company ranked No. 7 on the 2012 BUILDER 100 list of the nation’s largest builders.
Saint Aubyn Homes quickly went from upstart three years ago to market leader in Colorado, closing 344 units in 2012, up 167 percent from the previous year. The company began by constructing high-quality, energy-efficient homes at affordable prices in 60 days or less. Last year it introduced a higher-priced $350,000 to $500,000 product, as well as new house plans, which allowed it to increase its margin on sales. No. 50 on the BUILDER 100 list, it builds in southern and northern Colorado.
“Saint Aubyn Homes took advantage of the void left when national builders vacated the Colorado Springs/Pikes Peak region,” Dimeo said. “The area’s housing market continues to rebound, with a strong military presence and strengthening job base. Now it’s positioned itself for continued rapid growth with move-up products.”
