Washington, D.C. (May 1, 2012) – Employees from the corporate headquarters offices of Hanley Wood LLC will join the AEC Cares – projectDC initiative on May 16 to transform the blighted building at 5032 D Street into a new Sasha Bruce Youthwork house for homeless and at risk youth in Washington, D.C. Hanley Wood and Reed Construction Data have joined forces to raise much-needed funds and in-kind donations for the project, which will commence on May 16, one day prior to the start of the 2012 American Institute of Architects' National Convention and Design Exposition. Over 50 employees from Hanley Wood and Reed Construction Data will team up to guide young trainees from the Sasha Bruce Youth Build program as they renovate and retrofit the abandoned building at 5032 D Street from an eyesore into an energy-efficient transitional home. The building will serve as a safe place for homeless and at-risk youth as they attend counseling and partake in classes to develop skills that lead them on a path to independence and self-sufficiency."It is an honor to be part of this effort. It is particularly rewarding to help build a home for youth and families in our own local D.C. communities," said Frank Anton, Vice Chairman of Hanley Wood. Hanley Wood and Reed Construction Data volunteers will work with Sasha Bruce staff and students to convert the Marshall Heights structure into a home-like environment, with bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, offices and community space.

Projects include:

  • Installing ceramic tile
  • Constructing interior walls in the basement and kitchen area
  • Constructing and ADA ramp at the back of the house
  • Masonry work on the front porch
  • Placing Oldcastle brick in masonry veneer panels for the addition
  • Installing accessories in the greenhouse
