WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sept. 24, 2013) — Multifamily Executive, the leading media brand in the multifamily housing industry, unveiled the winners of its annual multifamily executive Awards at a special ceremony earlier this month, in Las Vegas.

Longtime industry veteran Julie Smith, president of Greenbelt, Md.–based Bozzuto Management Co., was named the 2013 Executive of the Year. Smith was one of two individuals honored among more than 25 awards presented at the event, which recognizes exceptional people, projects, and programs across 19 categories.

Smith was honored for the significant impact she’s had in the growth of Bozzuto Management Co. When she joined the firm in 1989, Bozzuto Management had just 15 employees. Today, it employs more than 600, with a portfolio of over 45,000 units. Smith led several forward-thinking initiatives positioning Bozzuto Management as a thought leader in the industry, such as getting out ahead of the social media trend years ago, creating an advisory services division, and spearheading several philanthropic initiatives.

“Julie Smith displays a rare combination of emotional intelligence and business acumen, equal parts entrepreneur and diplomat, with a trademark warmth rivaled only by a sharp intellect,” said Jerry Ascierto, editor-in-chief of multifamily executive. “Her contributions to Bozzuto Management can be measured in numbers, but the impact she’s had on those who have worked with and known her extends far beyond cold, hard metrics.”

Additionally, Billy Pettit, vice president of Pillar Properties, was named MFE’s Rising Star of the Year. The 34-year-old Pettit successfully rebranded the multifamily portfolio of the R.D. Merrill Co., which had previously been a seniors housing company. Beyond naming the firm, Pettit aimed its expansion at the Gen Y segment (coining terms like “Local-icious” and “Quietly Awesome” as overriding concepts for the rebranding) and gave Pillar’s communities hip, edgy names to match the Seattle neighborhoods in which they’re found.

The editors of multifamily executive also unveiled the seventh-annual Editors’ Choice Award, which recognizes a project that is “best in show.” That honor this year went to Heritage Oaks, an affordable housing community for working seniors in Oakdale, Calif. Developed by Adroit Development and the Central Valley Coalition for Affordable Housing in Merced, the 50-unit, Craftsman-style community achieved LEED Platinum certification, the first in its county. Designed by KTGY, Heritage Oaks is aimed at seniors earning between 30 and 60 percent of the area median income, but its affordable housing status is belied by its lavish amenity package, featuring hobby and craft studios, a game room, gourmet kitchen, technology center, fitness center, learning center, and a “man-cave” garage.

“The winners of the 2013 MFE Awards reflect the creativity and ingenuity of an industry firing on all cylinders,” Ascierto said. “We received a record number of submissions this year, with more than 300 nominations coming our way. And yet, only 25 winners were chosen—a testament to both the exclusivity of our program and the keen, discerning eyes of our judges.”
