For Immediate Release:

Inaugural Award and $25,000 Grant to be Presented to Make It Right

WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 8, 2014) —  The Hanley Foundation and Hanley Wood announced that Make It Right  of New Orleans will receive the first annual Hanley Award for Community Service in Sustainability.  The award, with its $25,000 grant, was created to recognize community-based and non-profit organizations working to advance sustainability and environmental awareness in the host cities of the annual Greenbuild International Conference and Expo, which takes place this year in New Orleans.  Make It Right was selected for its work building sustainable, affordable homes for people in need around the country, including New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward, the neighborhood hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina.

“With so much important work in sustainability being done by non-profit organizations on a community level, we wanted to create a special award to acknowledge Make It Right for their work in the trenches, and bring national attention to their efforts,” said Michael J. Hanley, President of the Hanley Foundation, and creator of the award.

“With Greenbuild being held in New Orleans this year, Make It Right was the clear choice to receive the first award for community service,” noted Peter Goldstone, CEO of Hanley Wood. ”The work they are doing to provide housing to families in the Lower 9th Ward is astounding. We are thrilled to recognize Make It Right and support their great work.”

The Hanley Award for Community Service in Sustainability will be presented alongside The Hanley Award for Vision and Leadership in Sustainability ($50,000) annually at The Hanley Award dinner, which takes place each year during the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo.  This year’s award will be presented at The Hanley Award dinner on October 21.

The annual award will recognize efforts of organizations working within the Greenbuild host city region  in one of the following areas:  1)  Providing housing that is affordable, sustainable and healthy; 2) expanding community awareness in sustainability and environmental issues through education and/or demonstration projects; 3) developing and advocating innovations in local and regional policies affecting sustainability; and 4) creating sustainable public buildings that advance community awareness.
